FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I talk during the massage? Yes it is ok talk to the therapist.  It is important to communicate with the therapist about the pressure being applied or if you become uncomfortable on the table...of course positive feedback is always welcome.   *Keep in mind that talking should be minimized to enhance the mind's connection to the body and the therapy that is occurring.

What if it is too cold or too warm in the room? We try very hard to accommodate everyone's body temperature.  In the winter months we heat the tables and in the summer we provide an air conditioned atmosphere if you are too warm.  You will still be covered with a sheet. Please communicate with you therapist regarding your comfort level.

What if the pressure isn't right? Please let us know what types of pressure you would prefer.  We can start out lighter and work easily into a different technique using either deeper or less pressure. Generally most therapists pay special attention to the individuals needs at that time.

Should I eat or drink anything before?

Any food should be consumed 2 hours prior to a massage to allow time for digestion It is recommended that you drink plenty of plain water the day before, the day of and the day after your massage. Refrain from alcohol 6 hours prior to a massage.

How often should I get a massage? It varies as much by person as by issue. Your therapist & Doctor will give you recommendations based your specific needs.

Do I have to undress for my massage? Always undress to your comfort level. The comfort of the client is very important in massage therapy. If a client does not feel comfortable on the table, then the treatment will not be as effective as they are not able to relax. Many clients choose to leave their underwear on during a massage and that is absolutely acceptable, especially if it is your first massage or the first time working with a therapist. Fully undressing ensures a better massage as the gluteal and hip region is able to be better addressed, however these areas can be accessed through the sheets or underwear.

Do you accept insurance? We do bill insurance if there is coverage; most insurance companies DO NOT cover massage therapy when performed by a LMT. Several auto accident carriers and workers’ compensation plans cover massage when performed by a LMT and we would be happy to check your policy. If you’re insurance DOES NOT cover massage performed by an LMT; most flex spending and HSA accounts do.

Why am I sore sometimes after a treatment and is this common? Yes, soreness can be an after-effect of the treatment and it is common to experience it. Soreness or tenderness can result from the pressure used to release the restrictions in your tissue, and can also be a result of under-hydration either before or after the treatment. If the body is not being properly hydrated after the session to flush out the toxins and metabolic wastes, they may be re-deposited into the muscular system causing tenderness.

How can I schedule my appointment? All you need to reserve your appointment is a phone and a credit or debit card.  You may choose to use another form of payment (cash or check) once the services have been rendered.  Please refer to the cancellation policy below.

What is your cancellation policy? Please allow 24 to 48 hours advance notice to reschedule or cancel. Cancellations in less than 24 hours result in a $40 cancellation fee. “No shows” will be responsible for the full value of the scheduled appointment.  The charge will go on the credit card you gave when scheduling your appointment. These rules also apply to Gift Certificates.

Monday & Friday: 4pm – 7:45pm (last appointment starts)

Wednesday & Thursday: 9am – 2:00 (last appointment starts)
Saturday: 9am – 2pm  (last appointment starts)

Do I need to arrive early? Please arrive at least 10 - 15 minutes early to use the restroom and ensure adequate time for us to discuss any changes in your health or medical status. To reduce wait time, please download, print and fill out these two forms: Office Policy and Client Intake Form.

What if I'm running late? Uh oh! Please give a courtesy call as soon as you know. Late arrivals are not granted extensions, and will receive the remainder of their scheduled session and full session price will be due.

What can I expect for my first massage? When you arrive for your first appointment, you will be required to fill out a Client Intake Form and sign the Office Policy. After discussing your health history, current need for massage, and any painful areas of concern the therapist will create a personalized session tailored just for your body.  Then you will be given a few minutes of privacy and peace to undress to your level of comfort before lying on the massage table underneath a blanket.  (You may undress completely or leave your underwear on if that helps you to completely relax). You will be draped in sheets and a blanket for the duration of the session. Take a few breaths to settle in and your therapist will knock before entering the room again.  Once the massage begins feel free to openly communicate if you would like to change the pressure, temperature, music, or have a drink of water. This is your time to relax, so be comfortable and content!

Why do I need to fill out the Client Intake Form?
The more your therapist knows of your medical history, the better they can adjust the techniques used during your massage. Please answer each question to the best of your knowledge. If you are unsure how to answer a question, just ask.  Take the responsibility to update your form when necessary (e.g. recent surgeries, new painful areas of concern, etc). Any information you provide is extremely private and confidential.

Is there ever a bad time to get a massage?
Actually yes, If you are suffering from
sunburn, severe burns, poison ivy, or any other form of widespread skin rash/irritation, please refrain from booking a session or call to reschedule your appointment within 24 to 48 hours. Also, if you've suffered from an injury within the past 36-72 hours, be sure to let our therapist know right away and depending on the severity of the injury they may refer you for an assessment with one of our Doctors.

Do you sell Gift Certificates?
Absolutely! Giving the gift of Professional Massage is a wonderful way to show your spouse, friend, or co-worker that you care about their well-being.  Gift Certificates are available in any amount of time you choose, although 60 or 90 minutes is most common. Once purchased, Gift Certificates are non-refundable and may be transferred to another person for use.

Do you accept tips?
Yes, gratuities are gratefully accepted at your discretion and are customarily 10% to 20% depending on the level of service provided.

Do you perform erotic massage?
Effective Chiropractic Health & Wellness Center provides only non-sensual, professional massage. Any act of sexual misconduct or harassment by the client will immediately terminate the session, and full payment will be due. EC has the right to refuse clients from booking or rescheduling.

Should I schedule a massage before or after an adjustment? If you are scheduled for a massage and an adjustment on the same day, it is recommended to get the massage first if possible. This will help loosen your muscles and allow the adjustment to move easier. If you are coming in on two separate days for treatment you may want to get an adjustment and then schedule your massage on another day. It is recommended this way to realign the spine and then work the muscles to help hold the alignment. If you are still unsure about what is appropriate for your specific situation, consult with your treating doctor.

Do I still need therapies if I have a massage on the same day? There are times the Doctor will still recommend therapies in addition to the massage. Each therapy has its unique therapeutic benefits and would still be beneficial.

Do I have to see the chiropractor to have a massage? No, you do not have to be under the care of the doctor to receive massage at Effective Chiropractic Health & Wellness Center; however the doctor will meet with you briefly during your initial visit or sometime during your treatments to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have. This consultation is FREE.

What if I have sensitivities to products? Please inform us if you have any sensitivity to products. We use all hypoallergenic product and linens are washed in detergent for sensitive skin. If you prefer you may bring in a lotion or oil that you know doesn’t cause a reaction.

What if I am sensitive to scents? We will not use any scented products during your session, however it is impossible to guarantee a scent-free environment because the scents of the essential oils will linger. Please let us know when you book your appointment of this sensitivity and we will inform your therapist.

What is the difference between a LMT/CMT and an RMT?

Maryland has two types of Massage therapists. The first is a CMT or Certified Massage Therapist and the second is an RMT Registered Massage Therapist. A CMT and RMT are required to obtain 500 accredited hours at an approved establishment regulated by the Maryland State Massage Therapy Advisory Committee. In addition to their 500 hours, a CMT must also attend 60 hours of college courses. Having this distinction allows the CMT to practice in health care facilities such as nursing homes, clinics, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. An RMT only has the right to practice under a private business, health club, or spa.

Both a CMT and RMT are also required to pass one of the following national exams:NCETMB or NCCAOM.
